Day Trip (Abilene, TX)

Drove a little north today to the ruins at Fort Phantom Hill.
This fort was built around 1850 to provide assistance to settlers traveling west. Sometime in the late 1850’s the fort was mysteriously burned.
All that remained were the stone chimneys from the log built buildings, 3 stone buildings, the magazine, guardhouse, and commissary storehouse.
The remaining buildings continued to be used, but the decline and abandonment of it and the town being built up around it began in 1881 when Texas and Pacific Railroad routed it’s tracks many miles to the south.
We walked around the grounds taking pictures of the buildings and lonely chimneys.
Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene
We left Fort Phantom and drove back south to the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene.
The Cemetery opened June 1, 2009 and is a very respectful place to honor those who have served our country.
They’ve done a very nice job memorializing the men and women of the various branches of the military.
Not a lot to say, as places like this makes one quiet as they see the gravestones/markers of the many service members being honored.
